Wine & Spirits
Enjoy a weekend of wines and spirits and we don’t just mean the alcoholic kind! While savoring (and even making) wine, cider and beer, explore some Butler County sites haunted by spirits.
Work your way through these stops at your own pace. When you’re ready for rest, check out hotels in Cranberry, Butler, or Slippery Rock.
Our first spirited stop is Wooden Cross Cemetery near Cabot. This site, marked by the remains of the original “wooden cross,” is the location of a mass burial site of those that died from a horrible flu epidemic in the 1800’s. These individuals were buried in unmarked graves and are represented by this single grave marker. There is a roadside marker about this site on the corner of Sasse and Cornetti Roads.
Next, visit Cabot’s Winfield Winery. Winery offerings are diverse enough to appeal to a wide range of palates including Black, Yellow and Red Raspberry, Raspberry Apple, Vignoles, Riesling and Chambourcin to mention a few. Next stop, Cellar Works Brewing Company, that focuses on locally sourced ingredients brewed with a farmhouse philosophy.
La Vigneta Winery is located on South Pike Road in Sarver and allows you to expand your palate with over 20 varieties of award-winning wines and small plates. Keep an eye out for high-spirited events to plan the perfect night out.
While heading into Butler you can stop at Stick City Brewing in Mars and Rustic Acres Winery.
Head to Butler, which has wine/spirit options for you
Butler Brew Works is on South Main Street in Butler and offers very different selections of beer. Butler Brew Works offers a rustic industrial pub atmosphere. Paired with a Chef designed menu, it’s a destination for beer lovers and foodies alike.
Recon Brewing is located on North Main Street Extension. Whether you're a craft beer enthusiast or are just looking to enjoy a night out with friends, you've come to the right place!
Follow East Butler Road until you arrive at Anna Marie's Winery & Cafe. Bring a date and indulge in fresh Italian cuisine accompanied with handcrafted wines that are bottled on site. The outdoor patio allows you to enjoy your meal with a warm breeze and makes a great place for a group gathering.
On your way into Evans City, you can stop at Missing Links Brewery in Renfrew. Between rural Butler and Evans City, The Beacon offers a haunted house and corn maze during weekends in October!
Evans City Cemetery is the next stop for spirits. Whether or not you believe the cemetery is haunted, be on the lookout for zombies. “Night of the Living Dead,” which revolutionized the horror film genre, was filmed here!
The southwestern corner of Butler County has quite a few stops, so choose as you wish.
On Zelienople’s Main Street, visit ShuBrew to enjoy their craft brews and "feed your sole," or Burgh’ers Brewing for a “yinzer” experience north of Pittsburgh.
Dining in Harmony offers both kinds of spirits! The Harmony Inn dates back to 1856 and there has been psychic documentation of friendly entities. See for yourself if you experience any unexplained images, air movements or electric impulses and enjoy a tasty dinner, while you're at it. The menu offers many traditional German recipes with a twist! If you're a fan of house brews you'll enjoy the vast selection they serve from Big Rail Brewing, located onsite, and a sister company of the Harmony Inn/North Country Brewing.
Not far from the Harmony Inn, explore another cemetery. This one may look a bit odd though! The Harmony Society Cemetery in Harmony, PA has about 100 unmarked graves surrounded by a stone fence. The best part is a one-ton revolving stone gate - see if you can move it!
An event to check out (if you visit in October) as you drive up Route 19 through Portersville is Cheeseman's Fright Farm, for a haunted hayride and haunted corn maze! Cheeseman's Pumpkin Festival is a more family-friendly daytime event where you can pick your own pumpkin, play in the hay maze or take a hayride.
Our final dining spot possibly features both types of spirits! North Country Brewing Co. is housed in a former funeral home and brews beer right on the spot! In addition to delicious home brews and food that does not disappoint, the pub is also home to old souls who roam at night: paranormal investigators revealed a man named Roy and a few other unknown spirits. The menu features unique items such as frog legs and elk burgers, but even the pickiest eater will leave quite satisfied. A beautiful country drive on Kiester Road in Slippery Rock will take you to DR Distillery where they proudly serve hand craft and distill whiskies and rum using techniques handed down over the generations.
We have two more sites with spirits... The first is at Slippery Rock University where the spirit of Emma Guffey Miller is said to haunt North Hall, which was once an all-female dormitory. She has supposedly been spotted walking around causing mild mischief, and strange noises have been reported. The second is known as Deadman's Bridge, which you'll find by heading east on St. John's Road near Slippery Rock's Old Stone House. Rumor has it that if you stop on the bridge, you will see car headlights and screams from a husband and wife killed in a tragic accident.
Whether you’re looking for an elevated cocktail, a locally brewed draft, or a spirit from another realm, Butler County is full of great wines and spirits.

A trip to Baldinger’s will make you feel like a kid in a candy store (literally)! The store still uses an old-fashioned crank cash register and has penny candy that actually costs one cent. A favorite is the triple-dipped malted milk balls – some people buy them by the case! Besides candy, Baldinger’s has the largest collection of cookie cutters around and Old World Christmas ornaments which are 10% off year-round. Cash or checks only!

At DR Distillery, we proudly handcraft & distill whiskies & vodka using techniques handed down through the generations.
Handcrafting & distilling the best whiskey possible while staying true to the “backwoods” heritage of ingenuity, independence, & hard work is the reason DR Distillery was founded. Western PA was once the whiskey capital of the United States in the early years of the country. Those techniques and knowledge have impacted American distilled spirits, legal & otherwise, ever since. DR Distillery is proud to be part of bringing the craft of small batch whiskey production back to Western PA.

The Old Stone House is a historic inn and museum of rural life located in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania.
The Stone House was built in 1822 by John Brown as a stagecoach stop and tavern to accommodate business from the newly-constructed Pittsburgh to Erie Pike, a busy highway that carried traffic northward from the forks of the Ohio River.
Travelers staying at the Stone House mingled with locals anxious for news from other parts; the house’s “tavern room” was a lively place of conversation, merriment, and hearty food. In the evening, travelers bedded down in simple (and often uncomfortable) quarters in the house’s upper rooms.
During its long history, the Stone House also served as a local post office and was used as a muster point during the Civil War. The inn was sometimes visited by highway bandits, and also was the hangout for two separate gangs of counterfeiters, one of which was led by a sinister figure whose cold demeanor earned him the nickname “Old Man North Pole.”
By the 1870s, the growth of the railroads meant the house was no longer needed as a stopping place for highway travelers. Consequently, the structure was rented as a family farmstead. Tenants still accepted occasional travelers for the night, and on Sunday, served chicken dinners to guests. The last occupants abandoned the venerable, old structure in 1918. For years, motorists along Route 8 could still see the crumbling walls jutting over the dense underbrush that covered the site.
Finally, in 1963 the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, hoping to attract visitors to the northern side of Moraine State Park, undertook the task of restoring the historic building. When the project was finished, the house was furnished with artifacts donated by local citizens. The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy turned over the restored structure to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) which operated the site as a museum for 20 years.
In the early 1980s, when the nationwide recession hit the tourist industry, the PHMC decided to sell the Stone House. Local citizens were outraged by this proposition, since their donations of money and artifacts had made the restoration possible. State Senator Tim Shaffer, working with the administration of Slippery Rock University, arranged a lease agreement with the PHMC that would allow the university to administer the site while the museum authority in Harrisburg retained ownership.
Eventually, the PHMC approached SRU with a proposal to enhance the university’s administration over the site. SRU President G. Warren Smith recognized the potential of the property for furthering the educational mission of the university, and in 1999 SRU took over ownership of the site. Today the Old Stone House museum is managed by faculty and students from the university’s History department.
