I love exploring new places close to home. I had never been to Jennings Nature Reserve when the blazing star was blooming. One hot, sunny afternoon in July I decided to go explore and was rewarded because the blazing star was in full bloom! I discovered that the plants attract lots of butterflies (especially in the afternoon when the sun is hot). The monarch butterfly wasn't much interested in the blazing star but rather perched in the hot sun on the wild grasses by the edge of the pathway. The monarch's took a big hit this past winter as there was a late freeze in the area where they migrate and thousands of monarchs perished. I was, therefore, thrilled to see even one monarch let alone have it decide to perch and patiently wait as I took its picture!
