Overview
Explore the fascinating history hidden in the landscape at the Jennings Environmental Education Center with Reading the Land: Discovering Jennings’ Secrets, a free, monthly program series that will train your eye to uncover clues etched into the land over thousands of years. Each session, participants will delve into the stories of Jennings’ natural and man-made environment, learning to “read” rocks, streams, trees, and more to understand how humans have shaped—and been shaped by—this land over centuries. With Jennings staff, you’ll uncover how the terrain reveals patterns of historical use, from early settlement to industrial impacts, and how today’s environment bears the imprints of these choices.
Together, participants will investigate clues to unravel Jennings’ own landscape mysteries. Why do certain areas have unique vegetation? How did early industries alter waterways? From well-worn trails to seldom-trodden paths, each hike will present a new puzzle piece, offering opportunities for you to observe and contribute to a growing picture of Jennings’ story. Bring your curiosity, comfortable hiking shoes, and an adventurous spirit as we dive into the landscape’s hidden narratives!
