Zelienople
This picturesque community was founded in 1802 by a well educated German aristocrat, Detmar Basse, who purchased 10,000 acres of post-Revolutionary War Depreciation Lands to create a town named for his daughter, Zelie.
A modern place with old fashioned grace
With the main route between Pittsburgh and Erie traveling through the heart of town, Zelienople flourished as pioneers purchased lots and established homes and businesses.
Some people affectionately describe Zelienople as “similar to Mayberry” because the picturesque town has retained its quaintness and charm despite the suburban growth surrounding it. Zelienople has a bustling business district of restaurants, coffee shops, and retailers offering toys, hardware, jewelry, gifts, flowers, baked goods and much more.
While shopping and eating may be high on your priority list, you may also want to step inside Zelie’s elegant home. It’s now a house museum filled with items that tell the story of Zelienople’s history. Or, plan a visit during one of Zelienople’s annual festivals. Here you’ll find small-town charm that will entice you to come back again.
Zelienople's rich history dates back to its founding in 1802 by German immigrants, and the borough proudly maintains its historic character. Its downtown area features beautifully restored buildings, Victorian-style homes, and quaint shops, creating a charming ambiance that attracts both residents and visitors.
The borough offers a range of amenities and services to its residents. Zelienople is home to a variety of local businesses, including boutiques, antique shops, restaurants, and cozy cafes. These establishments contribute to the borough's small-town charm and provide residents with convenient access to essential goods and services.
Zelienople is surrounded by the natural beauty of western Pennsylvania. The nearby Connoquenessing Creek offers opportunities for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking, while local parks provide spaces for outdoor activities, picnicking, and relaxation. The serene countryside surrounding the borough allows residents to enjoy nature and explore the scenic landscapes.
Zelienople hosts community events and festivals throughout the year, showcasing its vibrant community spirit. These events include the annual Zelienople-Harmony Horse Trading Days, which celebrate the area's agricultural heritage, as well as concerts, parades, and holiday celebrations that bring the community together.
