Hollywood Loves Butler County
In addition to various documentaries and short stories, some major motion pictures have used Butler County as a filming location.
Television shows such as Great American Country’s “Farm Kings” and an upcoming Netflix series, “Mindhunter,” have also been shot here.
Read on to learn more about our Hollywood connections. Also, fun fact, a movie called “Lesbian Grandmothers from Mars” is about lesbians who are from Mars, PA, however it wasn’t filmed here.
My Uncle John Is a Zombie! (2016)
- Filmed at Evans City Cemetery and Living Dead Museum
American Pastoral (2016)
Filming for part of Ewan McGregor’s directorial debut, American Pastoral, was done in Harmony late last year. The film also stars Jennifer Connelly and Dakota Fanning and is based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Phillip Roth. The story, set in postwar America, follows a legendary high school athlete who grows up to marry a former beauty queen and inherits his father’s business. But his perfect life shatters when his daughter rebels, blowing up the local post office/general store. Word on the street is that McGregor was very friendly and patronized local businesses. It was a thrill to watch this set be built, destroyed and promptly removed.
Concussion (2015)
Scenes for Concussion, starring Will Smith, were shot in a lab at Butler Memorial Hospital. The movie is about a pathologist who did research in the Western Pennsylvania area on the effects of repeated violent contact on brains.
Love the Coopers (2015)
Filming done on “Concussion” led to the filming of shots for ”Love The Coopers” also done at Butler Memorial Hospital. This movie is a holiday comedy about family.
Foxcatcher (2014)
A few years ago, Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo were in town to film this flick in the Connoquenessing/Evans City area.

Kingpin (1996)
This comedy features Woody Harrelson, Randy Quaid, Vanessa Angel and Bill Murray. Parts of it were filmed at Mars Lanes, which thankfully, isn’t Pepto-Bismol pink anymore!

Midnight (1982)
- Filmed in Butler County and at White Oak Cemetery
The Crazies (1973)
In The Crazies, directed by George Romero, the military attempts to contain a manmade combat virus that causes death and permanent insanity in those infected, as it overtakes Evans City - both in the plot and as the filming location.
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
George Romero introduced zombies to the world in this cult classic. Though the term zombies was never used in the film, “ghouls” have become such a popular topic, especially with hits like “The Walking Dead.” Today, there is a monument in Evans City paying homage to Night of the Living Dead and The Crazies as well as a Living Dead museum/shop, and an annual Living Dead Fest. Fans flock to the town, particularly Evans City Cemetery where the opening scenes of the film were shot.
