Buttercup Campground Welcomes New Ownership
After managing the Renfrew campground for 27 years, Ed Tanski has passed the torch to Jacob Hagofsky.
Jacob not only has experience managing the campground, for many years he also enjoyed Buttercup as a camper. Tanski has one specific memory of a six-year-old Jacob predicting his future role at the camp. “He slammed his hand on the (camp store) counter and said 'I'm going to run Buttercup one day’” Tanski recounted with a smile.
Tanski believes what makes Buttercup special is the relationships. Many campers are second, third, and fourth generation. Hagofsky has experienced the loyalty and kindness of Buttercup campers. “I got an email the other day from a former customer… he remembered me and wanted to congratulate me even if I didn’t remember him.” Jacob said “But I did (remember), him and his wife came every year and he always got a Butler Eagle newspaper. Walked down everyday for it, always prepaid for one to be saved if he wasn’t going to be in.”
Jacob has had many different roles at Buttercup over the years. “My first “job” if you call it that, was to pick up cigarette butts. We made a penny for every one we brought back to Barb (Tanski’s wife).” recalled Hagofsky “I was taught how to run the cash register around the age of 10 and thought that was cool. They always laughed because I enjoyed being able to ring up my own slushie.”
As he grew up Jacob moved up from working the campground store to landscaping and maintenance. Hagofsky went on to college where he studied criminal justice. But his passion for Buttercup drew him back to become the manager and now the new owner.
In addition to his personal connection and management work at Buttercup, Hagofsky has experience working on the management team for the Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association (PCOA) where he worked with campgrounds across the state. He also started his own social media company 52 Unlimited.
He’s looking forward to using his experience to bring exciting additions and upgrades to the campground. “I plan on making some store changes, building upgrades, park upgrades, cabin remodels, and more. I don’t want to give away too much of the fun and secrets but I’m very much looking forward to working with my amazing staff and being with our awesome campers.”
Nestled in the scenic hills of Butler County, spanning 40 acres of wooded and open landscapes just north of Pittsburgh, Buttercup now accommodates 300 sites with a dedicated team ensuring a delightful camping experience for families. The campsites are close to multiple attractions in the County, including being minutes from the Farm Show Grounds. Hagofsky is looking forward to kicking off the season in April.
